I'm now a Flipgrid Ambassador! Pretty pumped to share this awesome tool with not only my staff, but at conferences, edcamps, and other professional learning opportunities.
I've written about Flipgrid in the past, but I wanted to do a little post about 5 innovative ways to use it in your classroom in case you like it but you're a little stumped! 1. Use it as a bellringer! Have a question about what you learned the previous class period and see your students give their answer via video and more importantly see them think. 2. Have a class debate! Have your students create a video of their point of view then reply to a classmate. 3. Feedback. You can have your students give feedback on a lesson you just finished or a project they're doing. See what they think and what they would change! 4. Book Review. Use Flipgrid to facilitate book discussions over characters or plots or themes. Get them to dive into a character and share what they think! 5. Exit Ticket. Have your kiddos respond to something that they learned in your class, something they did or created, or something that they're struggling with. If you're interested in using Flipgrid more, visit Flipgrid's blog! There you can find more ways to use it in the classroom as well as ways to become a Flipgrid Certified Educator as well as a Flipgrid Community Builder. Also take a look at #FlipgridFever on Twitter! What are some other ways you see yourself using Flipgrid in your classroom?

So we've all seen the funny videos on Facebook & other social media websites about texting conversations back and forth between two people. What I had NOT thought about was how it could be used for education!
TextingStory is an app that lets you create a conversation between two characters. Think about using it for two people in history! Your students could demonstrate what they're learning by creating a conversation between Thomas Jefferson & Alexander Hamilton! How cool is that!? Also - where was this when I was in the classroom!? This would also be great for characters in ELA, to have conversations in a foreign language, for Science to impersonate a scientist and talk about a topic, etc! Super fun app that would engage students while still assessing them! Check out this classroom example from some of our DLCs: TextingStory Example Let's talk Flipgrid.
Super awesome video discussion tool that can SUPER enhance your classroom. Students record their answers to a question you've posed or share what they're thinking in a discussion on your class Flipgrid. Then, they can watch their peers' video posts and even comment back! Talk about upping the game when it comes to classroom discussion! Instead of having one topic discussed at a time, students can watch various viewpoints from their peers and have multiple conversations going on at once. Think of the possibilities of this when it comes to Foreign Language when you have your students talk to one another! You won't have to walk around to each individual group any longer - you can have them talk to one another and see the videos as soon as they post. I thought this was similar to Recap at first, but it's a different beast for a different purpose. Here, the students are posting to a grid that their entire class can see. They can comment back and learn from each other. Recap is fantastic - but for the purpose of assessing students in a manner that only the teacher sees. Flipgrid has paid and free versions, but the free version will do everything you need it to!
Recap is a free student response and self-reflection app. I heard about this tool last year and didn't fully realize it's potential until recently. Instead of asking a student a question via paper or even somewhere online and having them respond by writing or typing the answer, Recap allows students to record their answer via their smartphone, iPad, iPod, computer, etc. You can select the amount of time you wish them to have to answer the question, you can specify which students receive the question, and you can include an "Assess Yourself" poll question so the student has the opportunity to say if the "Got it" "Partially got it" or "Didn't get it".
When the student logs in, it pulls up their dashboard which lists all of the recap questions that teacher has asked with the corresponding due date.
The teacher can then see all of the students' responses for that particular question when they've submitted their video. This can be used for formative assessments or just reflections. Take a look at Recap's blog to get ideas of ways you can use it in the classroom. The video below is what teachers are saying about the Recap App.
Recap is great for all content areas and gets students thinking on a higher level. Try it out and let me know what you think!
We've all scoured the internet for review games and/or templates to use with our students. Google has been my best friend since I started teaching. Why create it yourself when you can find it online, right? I stumbled upon FlipQuiz this week while I was searching for a website where the STUDENTS can create the quizzes for each other. Yes, I could have used my old PPT Jeopardy game but I was looking for something a little more engaging. Enter FlipQuiz. FlipQuiz is great for teacher creation to use as an all-class review but I think it's even more beneficial to students if they're the ones looking at the content, thinking deeply, and creating the questions. It's easy to use and sign up is super easy with a Google account. They can make custom categories, and import pictures to go along with the questions. Preview it anytime to view what your game will look like. Each question is presented on it's own question card and you just have to click to reveal the answer. If you do the paid version, the website will tally the score but if you have the free version you will have to manually tally each team's score. It's a great way to assess your students as they're creating the questions and swapping quizzes with each other. My first teacher is trying it out today and I can't wait to see what the kids come up with!
Here's the link to their Demo so you can try it out for yourself! |
